Professor Doctor Major McKinley Ash was born on April 7, 1921. In 1942 he receivedhis degree in electrical engineering at the Illinois Institute of Technology. In 1943he received a certificate in physics from the University of Chicago. Dr. Ash servedduring World War II and was awarded the Silver Star, the Purple Heart, and theCroix de Guerre. He then completed his Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistryat Michigan State University and married Fayola Foltz on September 2, 1947.
